Biodiversity & Carbon Reporting
An EcoShield is engineered planting that absorbs the pressure wave from a bomb blast, so less of it reaches the people on the other side. Because the material doing that work is living planting, it also makes the space around it calmer, cooler and greener.
What an EcoShield does for the people around it
People respond to planting. Research on green space in towns and cities has linked views of plants with lower stress and better mood for decades, and spaces that look cared for feel safer to the people using them. An EcoShield puts a long bank of living planting where people wait, queue and gather, so the measure protecting them is also the thing that makes the wait feel calmer.
Dense planting can also hide things, and people notice that too. The height of each bank and the gaps along it are set with your security adviser, so your staff and the public keep clear sightlines across the space.
What it does for the local environment
An EcoShield is soil and living plants along its whole length. The planting draws carbon dioxide out of the air as it grows and stores some of it in its roots and in the soil. In summer it shades the ground beside it and cools the air around it as water evaporates from its leaves, which makes a difference on a hard, sunny forecourt where people stand for long periods. It also gives pollinators and birds food and shelter in places that have very little of either.
Where it sits in your carbon reporting
Large UK companies already report their energy use and the emissions from their own operations each year, under the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting rules. The new UK Sustainability Reporting Standards go further and take in the supply chain as well, known as Scope 3 emissions, and the Financial Conduct Authority has proposed making them mandatory for listed companies, phased in from 2027. Suppliers bidding for central government contracts worth more than ÂŁ5 million a year already have to publish a carbon reduction plan.
An EcoShield goes into those reports as a purchase, like any other piece of site infrastructure. The carbon its planting takes up is recorded separately from your emissions under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's land sector standard, which applies from January 2027 and asks for that carbon to be monitored over time. We will work through the figures with your sustainability team so the EcoShield is recorded correctly from the start.
